Paradisa, Unknown

Stephanie went to attend to something in the other room, leaving Ezio and Leonardo sitting alone in her living room. Ezio watched her go before turning to Leonardo conspiratorially.

"Want to see an invention from the future?" Ezio asked.

"I would," Leonardo said, already sounding a little excited.

Ezio reached over to grab the lamp on the end table by the neck, tilting back the lampshade to reveal the lightbulb behind it. Leonardo's eyebrows raised, just slightly.

"What is it?" he asked.

"A lamp that creates light with a glass bauble," Ezio explained, popping off the lampshade and offering it to his friend. It couldn't hurt to show Leonardo what he had learned in Paradisa so far, right? Leonardo was quick to start poking at the lightbulb with a look of fascination on his face.

"Now look," Ezio said quietly, reaching for the switch and turning it on. The lightbulb lit up, and Leonardo made a noise of surprise.

"It doesn't seem to use oil," he remarked.

"No oil at all," Ezio said, "it's electricity."

"Electricity," Leonardo repeated. "Fascinating. How does it work?"

"That cord." Ezio pointed at the plug. "It channels electric power from the wall into the lamp, which lights up the lightbulb." He glanced in Stephanie's direction –– no, she was still rustling around in the other room.

"I see," Leonardo said. He gently gripped the lightbulb and gave it an experimental tug; when it didn't move, Ezio made a screwing gesture with his hand.

"Like that screw machine you built," he said. "Turn it."

Leonardo already had it figured out, and he made another fascinated noise when the light winked out. He turned it back, and it came on again. He did this a number of times before unscrewing it completely to look at the base, and then look inside the slot.

"I see; it appears to make a connection with the metal."

"Yes," Ezio said, seriously. He actually had no idea, but he wasn't going to admit this stuff still went over his head.

"How exciting," Leonardo said, screwing the lightbulb back in. He squinted to watch the tiny filament begin to glow, creating the light. "That little wire plays a part, too. The glass is only a protective case. Perhaps if I could get past it, but I don't have my tools."

"I can do it," Ezio said, and with a click, the hidden blade popped out under his wrist. He gently put the tip to the lip between the glass bulb and the metal sleeve and was just about to try to pop them apart when Stephanie returned.

"DON'T DO THAT!" she said, suddenly, eyes widening.

Ezio might have been okay if she had just yelled, but the alarm in her voice startled him, and the look on her face told him that he was doing something highly stupid. The distraction combined with the pressure he was putting on the blade startled him into driving the blade through the lightbulb. This not only shattered the bulb destroyed the filament, but created a great blue spark between the lamp and the blade, and made a loud POP noise.

"Ezio!" Steph protested, moving over to take the lamp from them. Leonardo looked a touch disappointed.

"I was showing Leonardo how it worked," Ezio protested back at her.

"You have no idea how it works!"

Leonardo was smiling, and Ezio wanted to wipe it off his face. He settled for a dismissive tone. "Of course I do. You explained it the other day."

"Yeah? Tell me: what IS electricity?"

Ezio lapsed into silence for a moment before replying. "Lightning?"

She made a frustrated noise and put the lamp down on the counter. She disappeared into the other room, presumably to find a new bulb.

Ezio glanced to Leonardo, only to have Leonardo reach over and clap him on the shoulder.

"It may be wise to admit defeat, my friend."

Ezio just growled under his breath.
